How to Design a Chevron Pattern in Gravit Designer

Patterns have gone in and out of fashion for centuries, and arguably they never really disappear. The fascination they exert on human beings by their almost hypnotic beauty has never faltered.

Practically every designer has a natural tendency to create a pattern in almost every work. Some have opted for simplicity, others for the obsessively baroque, some for monochromatic patterns and others for colorful explosions, some for purely abstract geometric forms, fractals and others for the objects of the everyday’s life. After all, what is a graphic pattern but an attempt to imitate, to our best capability, the fractals of nature?

Create any Pattern in Gravit Designer

In this tutorial, you will learn an entire approach of a pattern making in Gravit Designer. Following this step by step technique, you will be able to create almost any pattern, no matter how complicated and intricate it is. In my video tutorial, I’m first giving you the essential four steps of the pattern creation, then I am focusing particularly on the chevron pattern, as one of the most basic and on-demand patterns in the graphic design industry.

Step 1. Create an Object

Every pattern starts with a single object. In Gravit Designer, anything that you are able to create, import or grab from the library can be repeated within the pattern. Gravit Designer allows you to make patterns from:

  1. Your custom artwork made in Gravit
  2. Imported vector files (you can import .SVG, .EPS, .SKETCH file formats)
  3. Raster files, bitmaps, and photos

I am using the cookie icon from the Gravit’s Library. Place your object on an empty canvas.

Step 2. Create a Clipping Mask

To make a pattern we need to create a tile. I am working with a rectangular one. Draw a rectangle around your object using Rectangle Tool.

Size up or down the rectangle to introduce more or less space in between the objects within a pattern. When you are done with a tile size, select both objects using the Ctrl/Cmd+A shortcut and bring up the Context Menu by clicking the Right Mouse Button key. Select the Mask with the Shape to create a tile.

Clipping mask in Gravit has a white background by default. To get rid of it, head over to the Fill Panel and click the Trash Icon.

The tile is ready, copy it by using Ctrl/Cmd+C or going to Edit/Copy.

Step 3. Create a Shape to Fill

Create a shape to fill with a pattern. I am just filling my canvas with the rectangle.

Step 4. Texture Fill

Keep it selected and head over to the Fill Panel. Bring up the Color Picker and select the Texture Fill from the drop-down menu on top.

Click Paste to fill up the shape with the cookies.

We are done. Thanks for reaching that far. I hope you can embrace this handy technique in your everyday design workflow. Feel free to share this article with your friends and visit vitorials.net for more Gravit Designer wisdom.
